Nadat hij autopech heeft gekregen, belandt de Franse journalist Sahebjam in een afgelegen Iraans dorp, waar Zahra hem over haar nichtje vertelt. Soraya's man, Ali wil van haar scheiden omdat hij verliefd is geworden op een veertienjarige. Omdat Soraya de scheiding weigert, beschuldigt Ali haar samen met de plaatselijke, corrupte mullah van overspel. Bewijs is er niet, maar de bevolking wordt gemakkelijk overtuigd. De onschuldige Soraya wordt gestenigd. Zahra's relaas maakt duidelijk dat de vrouwen rechteloos zijn. Haar enige hoop op genoegdoening is dat het verhaal van Soraya via de journalist de buitenwereld bereikt.
